Wall Mounted Assembly
Fixing Methods
Wall mounted signs can be either mechanically fixed by screws or adhesive fixed by double sided tape. Predetermine which fixing method is most suitable.
Screw Fixed
This method has the following benefits:
- Allows signs to be fixed to uneven or porous surfaces i.e. brick walls.
- Permits removal at a later date.
- Allows fixing of signs where tape fixing is not suitable.
- Can securely fix very heavy signs.
- Is not affected by extreme changes of climate.
Double Sided Tape Fixed
This method has the following benefits:
- Quick, clean and easy to use.
- Sign requires no special modifications during manufacture.
If in doubt seek expert advise from screw and tape suppliers who will be able to determine the best method of fixing.
Double Sided Tape Fixed Signs
Tape Application
This is best applied in the workshop environment and signs ideally will be prepared before fixing commences (see manufacture section).
Setting Out
Establish setting out dimensions first, then measure and mark out sign position using a spirit level. The use of a fixing template can be used where multiple locations are the same, this will assist with consistency and reduce fixing time.
Cleaning Fixing Surface
Ensure that the fixing surface is both clean and grease free, use special cleaners or primers as required.
Adhering the Sign
Remove release tape to expose adhesive and lightly locate in position, check with a spirit level and then firmly press to permanently adhere sign. Care should be exercised not to damage the sign when pressing firmly. The use of cloth gloves or a soft cloth will help to prevent this.
Screw Fix Signs
Screw Fixing Holes
Signs ideally should have screw fixing holes pre-drilled in a workshop environment (see manufacture section).
Setting Out
Establish setting out dimensions first, then measure and mark out sign position. The use of a fixing template can be used where multiple locations are the same, this will assist with consistency and reduce fixing time.
Drilling
Dismantle the sign and use the back profile as a drilling template. This will ensure that drilled holes line up with the screw holes in the sign. This method is suitable for small quantities of screw fixed signs, where multiples are required this may be assisted by the use of a drilling template. Prior to drilling the fixing surface the correct fixing types will have been selected i.e. Rawl plugs for solid brick walls or cavity plugs for hollow walls. Drill hole to suit plug used, clean out hole and insert plug. Where plugs are not required use a drill bit to suit a No 6 countersunk wood screw.
Fixing Sign – Small
Using countersunk screws, locate back profile in position and screw fix firmly. Slide on front profiles to re-assemble the sign and finally secure with locking strip. Use a spirit level to set out and check signs are installed level.
Fixing Sign – Large (multiple profiles)
If large signs are to be screw fixed then the use of vertically mounted double sided tape will help to keep back profiles together when front profiles are removed or alternatively a thin backing board (3mm – 6mm) can be used. Only front profiles directly in front of screw holes require removal to gain access to back fixing holes.
Projecting Sign Assembly
Projecting Fixings
Projecting fixings are used when a sign is viewed perpendicular to the fixing substrate. A typical application for this will be when viewing signs in a corridor location. These applications are achieved by using standard Modular Sign System projecting components.
Setting Out
Establish setting out dimensions first, then measure and mark out sign position. The use of a fixing template can be used where multiple locations are the same, this may assist with consistency and reduce fixing time.
Drilling
Prior to drilling the fixing surface, select the correct fixing plugs required i.e. Rawl plugs for solid brick walls or cavity plugs for hollow walls.
Drill hole to suit plug used, clean out hole and insert plug. Where plugs are not required use a drill bit to suit a No 6 countersunk wood screw.
Fixing Sign
Dismantle projecting sign by removing the grub screw with an Allen key and slide off the sign to reveal projecting rod and rose assembly. Unscrew the projecting rod from the rose in an anti-clockwise action.
Insert No 6 countersunk screw into rose and screw fix into position. Re-assemble projecting rod into the rose, making sure that the grub screw hole is at the top. Check projecting assembly with a spirit level.
Final Assembly
Re-assemble sign to the projecting rod, make sure that the sign is correctly orientated and then slide over. Finally fix into position by inserting grub screw with an Allen key.
Suspended Sign Assembly
Suspended Fixings
Suspended signs have similar advantages to projecting signs, but can be made dimensionally larger and can convey more information. These applications are achieved by using standard Modular Sign System suspension components.
Setting Out
Establish setting out dimensions first, then measure and mark out sign position. The use of a fixing template can be used where multiple locations are the same, this may assist with consistency and reduce fixing time.
Fixing Options
It is important to establish a suitable fixing method for a suspending signs. The standard suspension kit will allow for a range of applications as listed below:
- Toggle fixing with M6 thread will be suitable for
hollow cavity ceilings and ceiling tiles. - M6 machine screw will allow for fixing through
removable ceiling tiles. - M6 wood screw will allow fixing through solid
substrates like wood.
Always establish that the ceiling structure or tiles can with-stand the weight of the sign to be suspended.
Drilling
Select suitable fixing method first, drill and fix either toggle / bolt / screw. Take rose and ceiling barrel and screw onto M6 thread. Repeat operation so that both rose and ceiling barrels are fixed to the ceiling.
Suspension Wire
Signs are suspended using braided plastic covered stainless steel wire. Thread wire through fixing profile and draw through locking strip slots. Measure and cut wire to required suspension drop.
Final Fix
Check that sign is correctly orientated and offer up stainless steel wire into the ceiling fixing barrels. Finally secure using grubs screws and tighten with Allen Key.
Finally check that the sign is level.
Rod & Rose Assembly
Rod & Rose Fixing
The rod and rose fixing is primarily a screw fixed system that uses standard Modular Sign System components.
Setting Out
Establish setting out dimensions first, then measure and mark out sign position. The use of a fixing template can be used where multiple locations are the same, this may assist with consistency and reduce fixing time.
Drilling
Prior to drilling the fixing surface the correct fixing method will have been selected i.e. Rawl plugs for solid brick walls or cavity plugs for hollow walls. Drill hole to suit plug used, clean out hole and insert plug. Where plugs are not required use a drill bit to suit a No 6 wood screw.
Fixing the Sign
Rod and rose fixings must be dismantled prior to fixing on the wall. To achieve this loosen grub screws using an Allen key to both FP30 rod and FP30 rose and slide out 5mm diameter stainless steel rod.
Unscrew internal locator from rose and securely screw to the fixing surface. Repeat for all corners. Screw rose onto internal locator and ensure that grub screw hole is to the side (allows stainless steel rod to be threaded through vertically).
Final Fix
Slide 5mm stainless steel rods through bottom FP30 rose and then through bottom FP30 rod, repeat for top fixings and both sides. Measure protrusion of rod top and bottom to ensure correct position, check with spirit level.
Wallet Assembly
Fixing Method
Wallet signs can be either tape or screw fixed, this will depend on the application (see section wall mounted assembly).
Tape Fix
When tape fix is used, the sign can be installed complete without dismantling.
Screw Fix
When screw fixed, the sign will be dismantled to expose back profile and then fixed in position. Slide front wallet profile over back profile and then slide in acrylic wallet, finally secure in position using locking strip (right hand side).
Updating Wallet Information
Once the sign is fixed updating of paper inserts may be required. To achieve this firstly remove locking strip (right hand side) using the wallet key (WK). The key has a small hook that locates into the locking strip and allows it to be pulled up. Slide acrylic wallet side ways to remove from wallet profile. Use wallet key to push paper insert up and out of injection moulded wallet (ACW150) or open wallet and slide out paper on folded wallets. Insert new paper and ensure it is located accurately within the wallet. To reassemble sign slide wallet back in to the top profile and re-insert locking strip.
